Decision pointWhat to establish before purchase
X1 already meets all mandatory needsCompare the verified extra benefit against the complete premium. Do not require a larger model merely because its position in the range appears more attractive.
Only the X3 passes a particular fit testRetain the practical evidence and identify the relevant configuration. Recheck access and costs before treating that useful benefit as final approval of the whole offer.
Different body version is proposed laterRepeat essential passenger, loading and parking checks for the substitute. The same model name cannot inherit another vehicle’s configuration or practical assessment.
01

Write the reason for considering a different size

Ask which requirement has prompted the X3 alternative: a passenger arrangement, normal cargo, a particular function or another specific need. Do not replace the brief with an assumption that a larger model number is inherently better. Obtain separate identity records for each car, including body and original market. The X1 China-body guide prevents a standard-body assumption from distorting the smaller candidate's record. Keep any X3 long-wheelbase configuration identified in its own right. The comparison is useful only when both vehicles are actual, defined propositions and the desired additional benefit is clear.

02

Assess the same occupants in both cars

Use realistic front positions and the intended passenger arrangement on each candidate. Observe entry and exit as well as comfort while seated. A different external size cannot establish the exact occupant result. Record which person or requirement benefits from the change and what remains acceptable in the X1. If a safety-related seating question arises, obtain appropriate guidance rather than inferring compatibility from available space. A larger offer can justify consideration when it demonstrates a meaningful improvement, but that conclusion belongs to the actual configurations and people assessed, not every X1 and X3 worldwide.

03

Compare ordinary loading and everyday access

Check the load with the required passenger seats retained and use applicable securing instructions. Keep maximum folded-seat figures separate from the customer's normal arrangement. Then assess the garage, entrance and door-opening routine, because a useful cabin benefit can introduce an access issue elsewhere. The X1 practical loading method gives one side of the comparison and the X3 needs equivalent evidence. Do not recommend the larger candidate based on luggage volume alone. The owner's whole routine includes reaching the parking space, entering the car and unloading the specific items that prompted the enquiry.

04

Review the vehicle evidence equally

Give both candidates suitable condition and status review. New-described cars need delivered-equipment, registration and pre-delivery evidence; used ones also need history and present findings. A more expensive model does not establish better maintenance, and a smaller one does not automatically need less preparation. Request provider quotations for identified work on the actual combinations. Keep diagnosis and further investigation distinct. The buying recommendation should use evidence at the same level of completeness so the apparent additional benefit is not created by overlooking a material issue on one vehicle.

05

Make the complete premium explicit

Align currency, buying date, preparation, included accessories and delivery stage before comparing amounts. List the actual benefits the customer gains and any extra work necessary to reach the accepted starting condition. Do not invent future selling prices or use a generic annual running-cost forecast to make the decision conclusive. Ask destination providers about support for the specific configurations where relevant. If the X1 already meets the essentials, retain it as a clear alternative. If only the identified X3 satisfies a mandatory practical requirement, explain that benefit and its supported cost rather than describing the premium as unnecessary.

06

Keep substitution as a separate decision

Name the chosen vehicle and the configuration that provided the useful result. State whether another model or body can be proposed and what evidence would be required for approval. Retain the actual fit, equipment and condition record through final acceptance. A substitute X3 is not automatically approved because it is larger, and a substitute X1 is not approved merely because it is cheaper. Reconcile agreed preparation before release. The dealer can then explain why this car suits the intended owner and the accepted budget, without turning a specific comparison into a blanket claim that one model is better for every customer.

When the larger alternative is being considered for regular rear passengers, use the three-adult seating assessment consistently across the shortlist.

Buyer questions

Is X3 automatically the better family purchase?

No. Compare the actual body versions and the occupants, load and access the customer needs.

Does a cheaper X1 automatically meet the original brief?

No. The actual car still needs to satisfy the essential specification, fit and condition requirements.
